Change a role or remove someone

For managers and admins

You can change what someone is allowed to do, or take them out of Oncall. Managers and admins can edit and remove people. Only admins can change roles. Some rules protect admins.

On Settings → People, open the menu (⋯) on a person’s row. Point at a row (or tap it on a phone) to show its ⋯ menu. It can have these actions:

  • Invite to sign in (admins, for page-only people)
  • Edit details
  • Change role (admins only)
  • Remove person, which you confirm by pressing and holding Hold to remove.

What removing someone does

  • They lose access and stop getting pages straight away.
  • They come off every rotation. If they’re on call now, the next person takes over; otherwise the rotation carries on without them.
  • Open incidents assigned to them go to whoever is on call now, and the incident timeline says so.
  • Their past shifts and incident history keep their name. Their phone number and other contact details are deleted.
  • To bring them back, add or invite them again with the same email.

The roles

RoleWhat it can do
Engineer
Gets paged and sees incidents.
Manager
Does what an engineer does, and also runs teams and schedules.
Admin

Rules

  • Only admins can change anyone’s role, or edit or remove an admin.
  • Nobody can change their own role or remove themselves.
  • The last admin cannot be removed or demoted.
To hand over admin duties, make someone else an admin first, then ask them to change your role.
